Warning

Event

The Taliban conducted multiple attacks on Afghan National Army (ANA) positions throughout the country on Tuesday, June 12, and Wednesday, June 13. In Faryab province, militants seized the Kohistan district during an early morning assault on June 12. According to provincial officials, at least 13 soldiers were killed, along with Kohistan’s governor, during the assault. Authorities also confirmed on Tuesday that at least 14 security personnel were killed and 25 wounded during an overnight attack in Sar-e-Pul province. Taliban fighters conducted another assault on ANA positions in Badakhsan province on June 13, reportedly killing around 20 soldiers. The attack took place in the Jurm district.

Context

Also on June 12, the Taliban conducted a complex attack targeting a police headquarters in the Moqur district of Ghazni province. A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) was detonated outside the building, which was followed by small arms fire. At least five police officers were killed and 26 others wounded in the attack.

On April 25, the Taliban issued a statement announcing the launch of their annual spring offensive, which coincides every year with the arrival of warmer weather that allows militants to move more easily over Afghanistan's mountainous terrain. The group launched multiple attacks in Kabul, Badghis, Farah, and Ghazni provinces throughout April and May, killing dozens of security forces and civilians. Additionally, on May 21, the Taliban threatened to perpetrate attacks against "military and intelligence centers" in the capital, urging residents to avoid areas in close proximity to such facilities.

Nevertheless, a ceasefire during the observance of Eid Al-Fitr has been agreed on between the Taliban and the Afghan government. The government announced the ceasefire will run June 12-20; the Taliban said they will adhere to a ceasefire from June 15 to 17.

Advice

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
