Australia: Fog impacts transportation in Sydney July 5

Thick fog covering Sydney disrupts road, ferry, and air services on the morning of July 5; conditions have since cleared

Informational

Event

A thick fog covered the Sydney region on Thursday morning, July 5 (local time), resulting in disruptions to flights and ferry services. Some planes were diverted (to Brisbane and Melbourne), delayed, or canceled, with Sydney Airport (SYD) management advising travelers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport. Ferries services were suspended along the Parramatta River and to and from Neutral Bay, with replacement buses put into service. On the road, visibility was down to around 200 m (660 ft) in the early morning hours. While the fog progressively cleared allowing transportation services to resume, residual disruptions were reported throughout Thursday at SYD.

Context

The fog may have been caused by warmer-than-average temperatures in Sydney.
