Afghanistan: Afghan forces kill civilians in Nangarhar operation July 12

According to a spokesman for the provincial governor's office, Afghan forces killed at least six civilians and wounded four others during an operation against insurgents on Thursday, July 12, in Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province. The citizens were reportedly caught in the crossfire during a ground and air operation. Afghan military officials have stated an investigation is underway to determine the details of the incident.

Context

Nangarhar, located along the Pakistan border, has been a stronghold for Islamic State (IS) militants and has experienced heavy fighting and attacks in recent weeks, including a suicide bomb attack in Jalalabad on July 10, which left 12 dead.
