UK: Unrest possible in Northern Ireland during Twelfth of July events /update 1

Unrest and sectarian clashes possible during controversial Twelfth of July (pro-British) events in Northern Ireland

Warning

Event

Violent unrest continued for the fifth consecutive night in Derry (Northern Ireland) on Tuesday, July 10, where assailants shot at police and launched a Molotov cocktail in the neighborhood of Bogside. Other incidents - including vehicles hijacked and set on fire - were reported in the east of the city of Belfast. No casualties were reported in these latest incidents, which occurred the night before controversial annual parades being held by pro-British Protestants.

The so-called Twelfth of July parades - which celebrate the 1690 military victory of a Protestant king over a Catholic one - often prompt clashes between members of Catholic and Protestant communities. This year parades and other events will be held throughout Northern Ireland, including in Belfast, Ballymena, Derry, Brookeborough, Ballyclare, Donaghcloney, and Stewartstown.

Advice

Individuals in Northern Ireland are advised to avoid all Twelfth of July events and report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
