UK: Hosepipe ban in the northwest from August 5

Temporary hosepipe ban in northwest from August 5; 7 million households affected

Warning

Event

On Tuesday, July 17, United Utilities (UU) water service provider announced a hosepipe ban in the northwest region set to begin August 5 in order to "safeguard essential supplies" amid a looming water shortage. The temporary use ban (TUB) will affect 7 million households across Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, and Cheshire. Carlisle and north Eden Valley are exempt from the ban. Individuals using hoses to wash windows or cars, watering plants, or filling ponds or pools will be fined, according to a spokesperson for the company. It is unclear how long the ban will remain in place.

Context

The TUB comes in response to an extended heatwave affecting the area, resulting in reduced reservoir water levels. While other water companies have not imposed a similar ban, individuals in mid-Wales, Rutland, the Humber and the Bristol Channel, and the Isles of Scilly have been advised to limit their water use.

Advice

Individuals in the abovementioned areas are advised to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and to make appropriate preparations. To find out if your household is affected, please visit the UU's website.
