El Salvador: Typhoid fever outbreak continues as of mid-year /update 4

Abnormally high rates of typhoid fever reported halfway into 2018; take necessary precautions

The Salvadorian Ministry of Health reported 937 cases of typhoid fever between January and June, a significant increase over the number recorded during the same period in 2017 (675 cases). All Salvadorian departments except Cabañas have reported an increase in cases over the past six months, with the most affected departments being San Miguel, San Salvador, La Paz, and Sonsonate

Context

Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, usually contracted via ingestion of contaminated food or water. Symptoms of the disease can include high fever, diarrhea, rash, headache, and abdominal pain.

Advice

Individuals in El Salvador are advised to only consume bottled or treated water, eat thoroughly-cooked foods, disinfect and/or peel raw fruits and vegetables, wash hands frequently, seek medical attention if experiencing the above symptoms, and consult a doctor regarding vaccination options.
