A series of 27 earthquakes hit south-central Italy in the province of Campobasso on the evening of Thursday, August 16. The largest quake was a 5.1-magnitude tremor that hit around 20:19 (local time) Thursday night, with all but eight others measuring under a 2.5-magnitude, according to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The epicenters were concentrated near the town of Montecilfone at a depth of 9 km (5.6 mi). Authorities reported some damage to buildings in the area, but no inhabited structures were severely damaged. Additional earthquakes and aftershocks are possible in the coming days.
