Ecuador/Peru: Border restrictions increased for Venezuelans August 16

Government officials from Ecuador and Peru tightened entry requirements for Venezuelans, as announced in statements released on Thursday, August 16. Venezuelans entering the two Andean countries will be required to show their passports, as opposed to their national identity cards as was previously required. 

Context

The political and economic crisis in Venezuela has resulted in widespread migration and travel to other South American countries. According to Ecuadorean officials, border crossings by Venezuelans have increased by six times with 600,000 Venezuelans having entered the country thus far in 2018. Peruvian officials also reported higher numbers of Venezuelan migrants.
