Cape Verde: Tropical storm warning in effect into September 1 /update 1

Event

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a tropical storm warning for the Cape Verde islands of Santiago, Fogo, and Brava from Friday, August 31, into Saturday, September 1, due to the passing of Tropical Depression Six. Tropical storm conditions are expected in the area through Saturday morning, bringing strong winds and rain. Winds should subside into Saturday as the storm continues to move west. As of 02:00 (local time), Six is located about 135 km (85 mi) west-southwest of Cape Verde and producing sustained winds of 55 km/h (35 mph) and gusts up to 75 km/h (46 mph). Six is expected to strengthen to a hurricane around September 5 and will be renamed Florence. Flash flooding on southern Cape Verde islands is possible.

Context

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October. Researchers are predicting a slightly below-average hurricane season for 2018.
