Zimbabwe: Nationwide typhoid fever continues /update 1

Event

Health officials in Zimbabwe have reported at least 1500 cases of typhoid fever, including 10 associated deaths, in the towns of Gweru, Kadoma, and Masvingo between January 1 and early. The outbreak was first reported in early August in Gweru. Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health has issued a nationwide typhoid fever alert and has placed all hospitals on high alert to prevent further spread of the disease. 

Context

Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, usually contracted via ingestion of contaminated food or water. Symptoms of the disease can include high fever, diarrhea, rash, headache, and abdominal pain.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to only consume bottled or treated water, eat thoroughly-cooked foods, disinfect and/or peel raw fruits and vegetables, wash hands frequently, seek medical attention if experiencing the above symptoms, and consult a doctor regarding vaccination options.
