Tens of thousands of climate activists are expected to march and demonstrate in San Francisco (California) and in other major American cities and in Puerto Rico on Saturday, September 8, to denounce perceived inadequate action to combat climate change since the 2015 signing of the Paris Agreement. Related demonstrations and events, most demanding increased efforts to transition to renewable energy sources to slow climate change, are also notably planned in Boston, Miami, Portland (Oregon), and New Orleans.
Additional demonstrations are planned in San Francisco in the coming days ahead of and during the Global Climate Action Summit, scheduled to be held in the city from Wednesday, September 12, through Friday, September 14. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all related gatherings.
Context
The demonstrations in the US come amid similar rallies planned in some 90 other countries on September 8 to call for immediate steps to counter climate change. Demonstrations have been notably held in Bangkok, Paris, Strasbourg, Marseille, Sydney, and Manila, as well as in North Rhine-Westphalia state (Germany). A related demonstration took place in New York City on September 6; at least ten people were arrested.
