Afghanistan: Islamic State claims deadly Kabul attack September 9 /update 2

Event

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing attack in Kabul on Sunday, September 9 (Martyrs' Day), in which the motorcycle-riding assailant detonated his explosive charge near a march commemorating the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud. At least seven people were killed and 25 others wounded in the attack. Similar attacks are possible in Kabul in the near-term.

Additionally, at least 13 people were reportedly injured by celebratory gunfire on Sunday as thousands of gun-toting young men fired their weapons into the air on the streets of the capital. Security forces reportedly blocked key thoroughfares in Kabul during the celebrations.

Martyrs' Day, also known as Massoud Day, marks the 17th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the former leader of the Northern Alliance.

IS claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Kabul on September 5. The group claimed that approximately 150 people were killed or wounded in the blasts.
