Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall on South Korea around 09:00 (local time) on Saturday, October 6, resulting in the cancelation of nearly 300 flights. The South Korean government announced the cancelation of 276 flights, including 123 from Jeju International Airport (CJU), which closed in anticipation of the storm and is expected to resume operations on Saturday afternoon or evening. Heavy rain is expected in South Korea, with between 10-20 cm (4-8 in) with isolated amounts of up to 30 cm (12 in). Localized flooding is possible.
The storm is expected to pass into the Sea of Japan in the afternoon before curving back toward northern Japan. Kong-rey will continue to weaken before it makes landfall at Japan in the early hours of Sunday, October 7. An estimated 2.5-7.5 cm (1-3 in) of rain will fall on Hokkaido and northern Honshu.
