Kenya: At two people killed in Al-Shabaab attack in Mandera October 10

Event

At least two teachers were killed on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, October 10, when Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a secondary school in Mandera county. According to local sources, an estimated 20 fighters threw explosive devices at the teachers' living quarters at the Arabia Boys Secondary School before fleeing. Further attacks by Al-Shabaab are possible in the area in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Al-Shabaab regularly carries out attacks near the porous border with Somalia as well as coastal areas. Kenya has been part of a multinational force to fight Al-Shabaab in Somalia since 2011.

Advice

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Due to these and other security concerns, many Western governments advise against travel to a number of regions in the country, including areas bordering Somalia (e.g. parts of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu counties), Ethiopia, and South Sudan, as well as nonessential travel to the city of Mombasa. Several Nairobi neighborhoods, including Eastleigh and Pangani, are also best avoided.
