Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops clashed with Palestinian protesters during the latest iteration of weekly protests in the Gaza Strip along the Israel-Gaza border, on Friday, October 12, resulting in the deaths of at least seven Palestinians and leaving over 140 other Palestinian protesters wounded. An estimated 15,000 Palestinians participated in the demonstrations at several points along the border fence, with some burning tires, launching incendiary devices, and throwing rocks at Israeli troops. IDF soldiers reportedly responded by firing tear gas and live ammunition at the protesters. Further protests are likely along the Israel-Gaza border in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Palestinian protesters have rallied at the Gaza border fence since March 30 in a Hamas-supported movement dubbed "The Great March of Return." Around 200 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier have been killed in border clashes since the protests began.
