Afghanistan: Various Taliban attacks targeting security forces October 15-16

Event

Heavy fighting between Taliban militants and local police forces took place overnight on October 15-16 in the north and center of the country. In Samangan province's Dara-e Sof Payeen district, the Taliban attacked a number of security checkpoints, leaving at least seven policemen killed and 30 others injured; another 15 police officers were reportedly abducted. A security checkpoint was also attacked on the same night in Daikundi province's Kajran district, where 13 security forces were reportedly killed. Similar Taliban attacks are expected ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for Saturday, October 20.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on security forces in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are likely intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), and the Afghan government more broadly, to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and ahead of parliamentary and district elections.
