Afghanistan: Taliban attacks kill 50 people in Farah province Nov. 11-12
Taliban militants kill 50 members of security forces and detain ten others in Farah province November 11-12; additional Taliban attacks on security forces expected over the coming weeks
Event
Taliban militants killed at least 50 members of security forces and arrested ten others in separate attacks in Farah province overnight (local time) from Sunday, November 11, into Monday, November 12. Local reports claim that Taliban militants killed at least 40 security forces personnel and detained ten others in attacks in Khaki Safed district (Farah province) on Sunday night into Monday morning. Taliban fighters also killed at least four police officers in the Barankot and Bagh Pul areas of Farah city (Farah province) on Sunday night, and local sources reported that Taliban fighters killed six local police officers in an attack on a checkpoint in Gulistan district. Additional Taliban attacks targeting security forces are to be expected over the coming weeks.
Context
Taliban and Islamic State militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are in part intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and in the aftermath of parliamentary and district elections held October 20.
Advice
Individuals in Farah province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
