Indonesia: Shallow earthquake hits Sulawesi November 15

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on the island of Sulawesi at approximately 07:20 (local time) on Thursday, November 15. According to the USGS, the quake struck about 6 km (3 mi) east-northeast of Mamasa (West Sulawesi province) a depth of 8.7 km (5.4 mi). As of 07:45, no damages have been reported. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Indonesia lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire."

In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
