Australia: Over 100 bushfires ongoing in Queensland December 2 /update 3

Over 100 bushfires are ongoing in Queensland state as of Sunday, December 2. Temperatures were over 40°C (104°F) in some areas and accompanied by strong winds, causing the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) to warn of severe bushfire conditions. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advised residents in Captain Creek at 20:00 (local time) on Sunday to be prepared to evacuate due to a fire burning in the area. As of Sunday evening, one fatality linked to the fires has been reported in Rolleston. At least 527,000 hectares (1,302,245 acres) have been destroyed across the state.

Authorities are advising people in affected areas to remain on high alert as hot and dry weather is expected to continue through at least Tuesday, December 4.

Context

Queensland is currently in the midst of its wet season, and bushfires are typically uncommon at this time of year. Experts say the fires have been provoked by the current state of drought caused by a very dry winter.
