Severe weather warning remains in place for Cairns region (Queensland state) as of December 10; ex-tropical Cyclone Owen could reform later in the week

A severe weather warning was issued for the Cairns region (Queensland state) on Monday, December 10, after winds of up to 100 km/h (60 mph) were recorded off Port Douglas and at Cairns Airport (CNS). Heavy rainfall of up to 35 cm (14 in) was also recorded at Kirrama National Park (west of Cardwell) and 20 cm (8 in) in Cairns. As of Monday morning, thousands of people were without power in Mossman, Port Douglas, Mission Beach, and Tully.
Weather authorities forecast that ex-tropical Cyclone Owen could reform later in the week, bringing heavy rain to parts of Queensland from Thursday, December 13, as well as showers and thunderstorms to the northern tropics and the Gulf Country throughout the week. Transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas.
