Labor unions announce “red vest” protests planned for December 17; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) has announced a series of nationwide sit-in protests and demonstration marches on Monday, December 17. Organizers are marching to denounce the recently approved Finance Law of 2019, rising counter-terrorism expenditures, and government corruption as well as to call for wage hikes. Demonstrators in Tunis are expected to gather at Place de la Kasbah, while associated protests in other cities are to be anticipated at government offices and popular gathering points.
Union leaders have also announced a general strike set for January 17, 2019. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are expected. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Context
The "red vest" movement draws inspiration from the "yellow vest" movement which began in France on November 17 to denounce a fuel tax hike as well as to call for increased social protections and minimum wage hikes. The movement has since spread to other European cities, including in Belgium, Netherlands, and Croatia.
