India: Poor air quality, high pollution persists in New Delhi region Dec. 24 /update 3

Air quality in Delhi remains at ‘severe’ level for the third consecutive day as of December 24; similar levels expect in coming days

Warning

Event

Air quality in and around New Delhi remains "very unhealthy" as of Monday, December 24, with "severe" pollutant levels persisting for the third consecutive day. Weather authorities indicate current weather conditions and other meteorological factors, including unseasonably cold temperatures, resulted in "highly unfavorable conditions" for the dispersion of pollutants. As of 20:00 (local time) on Monday, Air Quality Index (AQI) stations operated by the Ministry of Earth Science recorded PM10 readings at 484; PM10 readings above 430 are considered "severe" and outdoor exertion is considered dangerous for all people. Similar air quality readings are expected to persist through at least Wednesday, December 26, and authorities have ordered a suspension of construction and factory operations through mid-week.

Authorities warn of potential health hazards associated with periods of high pollution, notably for certain vulnerable groups - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues. Air pollution can also be harmful to cardiac health and increase risk of heart attack or stroke, particularly among high-risk individuals (e.g. those with preexisting heart conditions).

Context

New Delhi is notoriously one of the world's most polluted cities. AQI is measured using PM10 and PM2.5 indices, which measure particulate levels 10 or 2.5 micrometers in diameter.

Advice

Individuals in the Delhi region are advised to monitor updates to the air quality index and avoid outdoor activities. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise additional caution. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
