Haiti: Opposition protest set for Independence Day January 1

The Pitit Desalin party has called for a series of demonstrations to take place nationwide on Tuesday, January 1, to celebrate the country's independence and to call for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse. Organizers have called on supporters to "replace" the Haitian flag with a "red and black" flag to mark the beginning of an opposition movement for 2019.

The demonstrations will coincide with Haiti's Independence Day. Government-sponsored events and parades are possible nationwide, including in Port-au-Prince. A heightened security presence is expected nationwide due to recent violent anti-government protests. Business and traffic disruptions are possible throughout the country during the holiday.
