Pabuk strengthens to a tropical storm on January 1 as it moves toward the Gulf of Thailand; rains, wind, and heavy surf expected for southern Thailand, southern Vietnam, and coastal Cambodia

Pabuk strengthened to a tropical storm on Tuesday, January 1, and is expected to affect southern Thailand, coastal Cambodia, southern Vietnam, and southern Myanmar in the coming days. The storm is forecast to continue strengthening in the Gulf of Thailand before making landfall near Chumphon province (Thailand) on Friday, January 4. Rainfall of 15-30 cm (6-12 in) is possible in southern Thailand, from Narathiwat to Chumphon, including the provinces of Surat Thani and Krabi, from Thursday, January 3, through Saturday, January 5. Flash flooding and landslides are possible. The southern Myanmar region of Tanintharyi is also expected to receive high amounts of rainfall and possible flooding. While it is not likely to make landfall in Cambodia and Vietnam, heavy rain and localized flooding is possible, including in Ho Chi Minh City, beginning Wednesday, January 2. Transportation disruptions, including road closures and flight disruptions, may occur.

Tropical Storm Pabuk, also known as Usman, passed through the Philippines last week, resulting in at least 75 deaths.
