Thailand: General election to be postponed until at least March /update 2

The Thailand Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday, January 15, that it intends to postpone the February 24 general election. The announcement comes as the Thai government has expressed concerns the election would disrupt preparations for the coronation celebration of Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X) in May. Reports indicate the new general election date will be set for mid-March. Pro-democracy demonstrations, political rallies, and campaign activities are possible in Bangkok and throughout the country in the coming weeks. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated near any demonstration. 

Context

Thailand imposed a ban on political activity following a 2014 coup when the military overthrew the civilian government. A ban on organizing political parties was lifted in September 2018. The current Thai constitution stipulates that general elections must be held no later than May 9.
