Indonesia: Increased activity at Mount Merapi volcano (Java island) January 16

Event

As of Wednesday, January 16, local authorities have reported an increased volcanic activity (i.e. discharge of incandescent lava from the crater) ongoing for the past two days at Mount Merapi volcano, located on the border between Yogyakarta and Central Java. Mount Merapi is reportedly emitting booming sounds. On January 15, a Waspada (caution) warning alert was issued - the second on a four-tiered national volcano alert system. As a precaution, authorities have set up evacuation routes and emergency shelters in anticipation of a major eruption.

Context

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is exposed to a permanent risk of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and tsunami. In October and November 2010, Mount Merapi experienced a series of powerful eruptions that killed over 350 and led more than 20,000 to evacuate.
