Mozambique: Militant attacks continue in Cabo Delgado February 23 /update 1
Suspected militants kill at least six people in Macomia district (Cabo Delgado province) on February 23; further attacks possible in near term
Event
Unidentified militants reportedly ambushed a civilian vehicle traveling through Macomia district (Cabo Delgado province) on Saturday, February 23. According to local reports, the car was intercepted by gunmen while traveling to Mucojo from Macomia. The gunmen shot and killed at least six people and wounded several other passengers. Militant attacks were also reported in Matapata (Palma district) and Quelimane on Sunday, February 24. Further such attacks are possible in the near term.
Context
Additional government forces have been deployed into Cabo Delgado province since February 21, when an oil company convoy was ambushed near the village of Mute. Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is suspected of conducting the ambushes. The group is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
