Heavy rainfall and flooding reported in Amman February 28 as authorities declare state of emergency; lingering transportation disruptions expected over coming hours
Event
Heavy rainfall, flooding, and high wind gusts have been reported in Amman and elsewhere across Jordan on Thursday, February 28, causing traffic disruptions. Streets and buildings have also been flooded in the capital, with authorities declaring a state of emergency in Greater Amman municipality to facilitate addressing storm impacts.
Heavy rainfall and flooding has also been reported in Aqaba, as well as in low-lying areas and wadis across the country. The Karak-Dead Sea Road was closed late (local time) Wednesday, February 27, due to elevated water levels, and remained closed as of Thursday morning. Lingering flooding and transportation disruptions (including flight delays and cancelations) are to be expected in Jordan over the coming hours before drier weather moves into most affected areas beginning Friday, March 1.
Advice
Individuals in Jordan, particularly those in Amman, are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid flood-prone areas, prepare for lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
