Event
A suspected militant detonated a body-borne improvised explosive device (BBIED) in a restaurant in Idlib (Idlib province) on Friday, March 1, killing at least eight people, including suspected jihadists, and wounding 22 others. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; however, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the suicide bomber was believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group. Similar attacks are possible in Idlib over the near term.
Context
IS has lost most of the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria after suffering major military defeats following its 2014 offensive.
