Australia: Tropical Cyclone Trevor to hit Far North Queensland March 19

Tropical Cyclone Trevor is due to make landfall in Far North Queensland on Tuesday, March 19, bringing strong winds and large amounts of rain to the Cape York region. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a cyclone warning for areas from Jardine River to Cape Flattery. Rainfall of up to 25 cm (10 in) may fall in areas of Queensland and strong winds are expected. Flash flooding and associated disruptions, including the potential closure of State Route 81 and flight cancelations, are possible.

As of 13:00 (local time), on Monday, March 18, the storm was producing sustained winds of 83 kph (52 mph) and is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 cyclone, or the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane, before landfall with sustained winds of 139 kph (86 mph). The storm will weaken as it moves across Cape York Peninsula before entering the Gulf of Carpentaria on Wednesday, March 20, where it will regain strength and head toward the Northern Territory.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate severe weather, flooding, and power and transportation disruptions, including road closures and flight delays and cancelations, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult.
