Kenya: Police fire tear gas at protesters outside of DCI March 18

Police fire tear gas at protesters outside of DCI in Nairobi March 18; heightened tensions and travel disruptions reported

Warning

Event

Police fired tear gas at protesters outside of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday, March 18. The more than 50 protesters are members of the Ekeza Sacco and camped outside DCI headquarters to record statements over claims of savings misappropriation by the Ekeza Sacco management, Gakuyo Real Estate, and Gakuyo Investment Club. Protests led to major traffic disruptions along Kiambu Road. Heightened tensions and travel disruptions are to be expected near potential similar protests over the near term.

Context

DCI investigators had invited those from Nairobi and Kiambu counties who had allegedly been affected by the fraud scheme to report to DCI headquarters to record statements at 9:00 (local time) on March 18, but upon arrival, protesters from Nairobi were told to come back another day to air their grievances.

Advice

Individuals in Nairobi should avoid the vicinity of DCI headquarters, Kiambu Road, and all protests and demonstrations as a precaution. Monitor the situation and adhere to instructions by local authorities.
