Afghanistan to celebrate Nowruz, or Afghan New Year, on March 21; US Embassy warns of terrorist threat during celebrations

Afghanistan will celebrate Nowruz, or Afghan New Year, on Thursday, March 21, throughout the country. Nowruz is a public holiday and government and business disruptions are expected on Thursday and through Saturday, March 23. The US Embassy in Kabul issued an advisory on Monday, March 18, warning of the threat of terrorist attacks and activity during festivities, including attacks on Afghan and Western government buildings, common gathering areas, schools, and crowded places.

Nowruz is celebrated during the vernal equinox and is recognized as the Afghan New Year.
