Australia: Tropical Cyclone Trevor makes landfall March 23 /update 3
Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor makes landfall near the Queensland and Northern Territory border on March 23; destructive winds and heavy rain expected
Event
As of 16:00 (local time) on Saturday, March 23, Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor is moving inland in the Carpentaria District east of Cape Crawford. The storm made landfall earlier in the day, bringing strong winds and heavy rain near Borrolooa and the border between Queensland and Northern Territory. Trevor is currently a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 kph (75 mph) and moving southwest. According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, the storm will bring destructive winds and heavy rain into the Cape Crawford area through Saturday evening. A high storm surge is also expected for the southwestern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Consequent flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions are possible.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders, road closures), and anticipate power and telecommunication outages, severe weather, flooding, and transportation disruptions (e.g. flight cancelations, road closures).
Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items in contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
