Teachers’ unions call for a nationwide strike and associated protests April 4; localized disruptions expected near demonstrations

Seven teachers' unions have called for a nationwide strike on Thursday, April 4, to protest proposed education reforms under consideration by the legislature. An associated march is scheduled to take place in Paris beginning at 14:00 (local time) from Place de l'Opéra to Place de la République, via Rue du 4 Septembre, Rue Réaumur, and Rue du Temple.

Additional protests are planned in other French cities on Thursday, including in Bordeaux at Place de la République at 11:30, Toulouse at Allée Jean Jaurès at 14:00, and La Rochelle at Place de Verdun at 14:00.

Numerous school closures across the country, as well as a heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions, are to be expected throughout the day.

Context

Teachers' unions previously staged demonstrations on March 30 which was reportedly attended by as many as 36,000 people.
