The General Federation of Transport announced a nationwide fuel transportation strike will be held between April 12-13; it is expected that there will be a shortage of fuel across the country during the two day strike

Warning

Event

The General Federation of Transport has announced a nationwide fuel transportation strike on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13. The nationwide strike is excepted to affect the 24 Tunisian provinces and is likely to result in fuel shortages in service stations across the country over the two days. As motorists rush to fill up their tanks before Friday, April 12, there is an increasing urgency regarding the potential shortage of fuel.

Associated demonstrations and transportation disruptions remain possible in Tunis and other Tunisian cities amid a heightened security presence especially if the strike goes ahead.

Context

The strike was announced following the non-implementation of past agreements related to wage increase signed by the federation of transport and the Tunisian Union of Industry Commerce and Handicrafts (UTICA), to which it belongs. Fuel transport workers also demanded for fuel to be included in the list of dangerous products in order to benefit from the advantages related to this classification.

Advice

Individuals present in Tunisia are advised to monitor the situation, fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations. Avoid all related protests and demonstrations.
