Kenya: Adverse weather conditions forecast nationwide through April 28

Heavy rains and associated flooding expected nationwide through April 28; transportation disruptions reported

Warning

Event

As of Wednesday, April 24, adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, flooding, and high temperatures are forecast in several counties nationwide through Sunday, April 28. Flooding has been reported in the capital Nairobi, as well as in neighboring counties in the Rift Valley and in portions of western and northeastern Kenya as of Wednesday morning, causing widespread traffic disruptions.

Additionally, weather officials have issued a heavy rain advisory for the counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo effective Friday, April 26, through Sunday, April 28, as forecasts indicate rainfall totals are likely to exceed 30 mm (1.1 in), accompanied by temperatures of 40°C (104°F), over the coming days. Much of these areas were experiencing drought-like conditions, prompting concerns for flash flooding.

The Kenya National Highways Authority also closed portions of the B3 highway on Tuesday, April 23, due to flooding. Officials indicate heavy rainfall in the areas of Mount Longonot and Mount Suswa resulted in flash flooding that disrupted traffic on Kamandura-Mai Mahiu-Narok road. Further associated flooding and landslides are possible, with inclement weather conditions expected to persist until at least Wednesday, April 24. Related transportation disruptions, along with power cuts, are possible in the affected areas.

Advice

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
