Heavy rain advisory issued for Kenya's coastal region through May 25; flooding and consequent transportation disruptions likely over coming days
Event
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rain advisory for the coastal region from Thursday, May 23, to Saturday, May 25. According to KMD, the counties of Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale, and the southern parts of Tana River and Lamu are forecast to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds. Rainfall totals of above 4 cm (1.5 in) are forecast for the region on Thursday, and 3 cm (1 in) of rain is forecast on Friday, May 24. The rains are expected to subside on Saturday.
Flooding and consequent transportation disruptions, including due to road closures, are likely in the affected areas over the coming days
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, telecommunications and power outages, and widespread transportation disruptions (including due to flight disruptions and road obstructions), stockpile sufficient food, water, and medical supplies, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
