Nigeria: Military base attacked in Borno state June 13 /update 1

Event

Islamic State West Africa province (ISWAP) fighters raided a military base near Kareto (Borno state) on the morning (local time) of Thursday, June 13. According to military sources, the attack started at approximately 04:00 when militants assaulted the position with gun trucks. The soldiers were reportedly forced to withdraw from the base and suffered several fatalities, including their commander. ISWAP claimed that its fighters seized weapons and equipment and set the base on fire. Further militant attacks and security operations are expected in Borno state in the near term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
