Event

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Tonga on the morning (local time) of Sunday, June 16. The earthquake struck some 97 km (60 mi) east-northeast of 'Ohonua. No tsunami warning was issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals near the affected areas are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
