Event

Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Sunday, June 16, that a Turkish outpost located in Idlib was attacked with mortar fire and shelling from Tall Bazan, an area controlled by Syrian government forces. Turkish forces used heavy weapons in retaliation. The attack reportedly caused material damages.

Such further attacks targeting Turkish military positions are possible in Idlib over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
