Tropical storm forecast to pass over Taiwan on July 3; transportation disruptions, including flight cancelations, possible

A tropical depression in the Pacific Ocean is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm and pass over Taiwan on Wednesday, July 3. The storm is currently producing sustained winds of 55 kph (35 mph) but is forecast to strengthen to a Severe Tropical Storm by Tuesday, July 2, with sustained winds of 93 kph (58 mph) and gusts up to 120 kph (75 mph). The storm is still 1450 km (900 mi) from the coast of Taiwan and its trajectory may change in the coming days.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and associated disruptions, including landslides, road closures, and train and flight delays and cancelations, are possible for the entire island and particularly Hualien and Taitung counties. High surf and strong waves are also possible along the east coast.
