Syrian air defenses engage Israeli missiles around Damascus and Homs July 1; similar attacks possible over the near term

Syrian air defenses reportedly engaged Israeli missiles which targeted Syrian military positions around Damascus and Homs, per Syrian state reports early (local time) on Monday, July 1. Syrian state media reported that at least one person was killed in Sahnaya, south of Damascus, in the attacks.

Similar Israeli attacks are possible in Syria over the near term.

Context

Over the past year and a half, the Israeli military has struck more than 200 targets in Syria, many of which have been arms depots and military facilities allegedly receiving arms and fighters from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
