Australia: Police uncover suspected terror plot in Sydney July 2

Security forces arrest three people during counterterrorism raids in Sydney on July 2; further operations possible

Members of the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team carried out a series of raids across Sydney on the morning (local time) of Tuesday, July 2. Local media sources reported that raids were conducted in several suburbs including Canada Bay, Toongabbie, Chester Hill, and Ingleburn. According to police officials, three men were arrested during the operation on suspicion of planning a terror attack. The suspects have allegedly pledged support to the Islamic State (IS) but no official charges were immediately announced. New South Wales police said that there is no immediate threat to the public and further information will be released "at an appropriate time." Similar security operations are possible in the near term.
