India: Heavy rain in Mumbai causes significant disruptions July 2

The Maharashtra state government declared a public holiday in Mumbai on Tuesday, July 2, as heavy rains continue to affect the area. Significant transportation disruptions are ongoing in the city, including flight delays and cancelations at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM). Some suburban and regional trains have suspended service and extra buses are replacing trains. Schools and colleges have been closed and officials are asking residents to avoid leaving their homes unless ordered to. At least 20 people have been killed by the rains, including 14 people who died in Malad East after a wall collapsed. Dozens of people have also sustained injuries from the severe weather. Additional heavy rainfall is forecast in the region through at least Friday, July 5. Further transportation and commercial disruptions are also possible in the coming days.
