Officials declare a public holiday in Mumbai on July 2 as heavy rains cause significant transportation disruptions and flooding; at least 20 people killed in the area

Warning

Event

The Maharashtra state government declared a public holiday in Mumbai on Tuesday, July 2, as heavy rains continue to affect the area. Significant transportation disruptions are ongoing in the city, including flight delays and cancelations at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM). Some suburban and regional trains have suspended service and extra buses are replacing trains. Schools and colleges have been closed and officials are asking residents to avoid leaving their homes unless ordered to. At least 20 people have been killed by the rains, including 14 people who died in Malad East after a wall collapsed. Dozens of people have also sustained injuries from the severe weather. Additional heavy rainfall is forecast in the region through at least Friday, July 5. Further transportation and commercial disruptions are also possible in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Mumbai are advised to monitor local weather reports, obey all instructions issued by the local authorities, anticipate transportation disruptions, including road closures and damaged infrastructure, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult.

Travelers flying to or from BOM are advised to confirm flight reservations prior to leaving for the airport.
