Members of the Cameroonian diaspora due to protest in Geneva July 6; heightened security measures expected

Warning

Event

Members of Cameroon's diaspora are reportedly planning a new protest in Geneva on Saturday, July 6, against Cameroonian President Paul Biya's visit to Switzerland. The exact times and locations of the protest have not yet been announced. However, a related demonstration took place outside of the UN's headquarters on Saturday, June 29, before supporters tried to reach the InterContinental Hotel where the Cameroonian president is reportedly staying.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the vicinity of all demonstration sites, particularly around the hotel and the UN headquarters. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

On June 29, Cameroonian nationals protesting President Biya's presence in Switzerland clashed with security forces when protesters tried to reach the InterContinental Hotel. The Swiss police used tear gas, water cannons, and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. Earlier in the week on June 25, Cameroonian protesters forced their way into the hotel and clashed with President Biya’s personal security detachment.

Advice

Individuals in Geneva are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
