Mozambique: IS claims responsibility for July 3 attack in Cabo Delgado

Event

Islamic State (IS) militants claimed responsibility on Friday, July 5, for the July 3 attack in northern Cabo Delgado province. Militants attacked the Lidjungo village, killing seven people, including one police officer.

The attack followed a joint security operation between Mozambican and Tanzanian forces along both countries' borders.

A heightened security presence is anticipated in the Cabo Delgado province in the coming weeks. Further militant attacks are also possible in the near term.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out various attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. However, this is the second time IS militants claim responsibility for attacks in the region, though, local authorities remain cautious regarding a potential IS presence in the area.
