A 6.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Tugu Hilir August 2; tsunami warning issued
Event
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.8-magnitude offshore earthquake approximately 105 km (65 mi) southwest of Tugu Hilir (Banten Province) on Friday, August 2. According to initial reports, the quake hit at around 19:00 (local time).
Immediate evacuation orders were issued for Banten and Lampung coastal areas by the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency (BNBP). People in the threatened area were ordered to immediately direct themselves away from the beach and riverbanks to higher elevations.
Indonesia's government has issued an early warning tsunami warning, instructing individuals to avoid all coastal areas. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals near the affected areas are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
