Philippines: Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal issued for Luzon August 7 /update 1

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TWCS) for parts of Luzon on Wednesday, August 7, as Typhoon Hanna (Lekima) continues to move north through the Philippine Sea. Outer rainbands of Hanna are expected to bring heavy rains and gusty winds to some areas of the country through Thursday, August 8. As of 11:00 (local time) on Wednesday, the TWCS is in effect for Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands. Winds of 30-60 kph (19-37 mph) are forecast in the area, which might cause minor material damage. Moderate to heavy monsoon rains are also expected throughout northern parts of the country. Flash flooding, landslides, and associated transportation disruptions are possible.

Typhoon Hanna was located near 20.6°N, 128.0°E as of 10:00 on Wednesday in the Philippine Sea (map here). The storm is not expected to make landfall on any part of the country and will likely leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday, August 9.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
