Japan: Flights and trains canceled in southern Japan August 15 /update 3

Transportation disruptions are ongoing throughout southern Japan as Typhoon Krosa nears the city of Uwajima (Ehime prefecture) on the morning (local time) of Thursday, August 15. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled over 300 domestic and international flights on Thursday, as well as some flights between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) and Kansai International Airport (KIX). Almost all bullet train service has also been suspended on Kyushu and Shikoku islands. Severe weather warnings are in effect for Kyushu and Shikoku islands, and evacuation advisories have been issued for over 310,000 residents. Officials warned that parts of Shikoku island may experience up to 1 m (39 in) of rainfall on Thursday.

As of 09:50 on Thursday, Krosa is located approximately 60 km (37 mi) south-southwest of Uwajima (map here). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 111 kph (69 mph) and gusts up to 157 kph (98 mph). Flooding, landslides, mudslides, and strong storm surge are expected in southern and western parts of the country in the coming hours and into Friday, August 16. Further transportation disruptions, including flight and rail delays or cancelations, are possible, as well as power outages.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
