National census set to begin August 24; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

Kenya's National Bureau of Statistics is set to hold a population census between Saturday, August 24, through Saturday, August 31. Most census exercises will be conducted during the first two days between the hours of 18:00 and 22:00 (local time), during which various restrictions on movements will be in place. Roadblocks will be erected along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway to ensure that those in transit are enumerated. Authorities have warned travelers to expect significant delays. Additionally, the Ministry of Interior has ordered the closure of all bars and social establishments at 17:00 (local time) on August 24-25. Additional security personnel have been deployed nationwide for the census.
